Spring Newsletter 2019

Dear Friends:

As we welcome spring, the Columbia Choral Society has many upcoming events we’d love to share with you!

We hope you will come hear our 2019 Spring Concert, which will be held on Sunday, April 28, at 4:00 P.M., at Main Street United Methodist Church in downtown Columbia, SC.  We are excited to be performing Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo.  This is an exciting work based upon Psalm 100.  Dan Forrest brings alive the words “O be joyful in the Lord all ye lands” by setting the work to seven different languages, along with a music inspired by each land. We are grateful to Main Street United Methodist Church, our many sponsors, friends, and advertisers who are enabling us to produce this wonderful concert.

Another important event for us is Midlands Gives Day, which is May 7th. Midlands Gives is a wonderful organization that gives various nonprofits in the Midlands an opportunity to raise funds. Funds raised by CCS through Midlands Gives will be used not only to offset costs of operation but also to continue our mission of developing the next generation of vocal artists through scholarship and performance opportunities. Giving to CCS through Midlands Gives is simple, can be completed online, and only takes a minute.  Even better, you don’t have to wait until May 7; all you have to do is click here and enter the donation amount of your choice.

Finally, we will conclude our Spring season with a performance at Piccolo Spoleto in Charleston, SC.  Our performance is at 5 pm, Sunday June 2, 2019 at St Philip’s Episcopal Church 142 Church St, Charleston. Piccolo Spoleto, the official outreach arm of Spoleto Festival USA, is produced by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs. There are many wonderful events to see at the festival and thus makes for a great weekend getaway.  Click here to find out more information. We hope to see you there!

As always, thank you for your continued participation and support!

From Our Director

Dear Friends:

Welcome to the 2017-2018 season of the Columbia Choral Society!

We had an amazing season last year! In October, we performed with the SC Philharmonic and then presented our own fall concert which featured the music of Brahms and Beethoven.  Our spring concert, a collaboration with singers and musicians from Ridge View and Richland Northeast High Schools, received high praise from our audience. The young soloists and our Guthrie Darr scholarship winner, Michael N’twa, were truly inspiring examples of the next generation of singers. We concluded the season with a Piccolo Spoleto Festival performance of Jasmine Rhythms, an original piece written by Dick Goodwin, with text by Camden poet, Paddy Bell.  Performed with Dick Goodwin’s Big Band to a packed house, this concert was a great success and wonderful way to end the season.

This year, we are looking forward to two concerts. In the fall, we will participate in another choral collaboration with singers from Chapin and Richland Northeast High Schools. Inspired by the solar eclipse, the theme of this concert is Darkness and Light.  The program will feature works by twentieth century composers such as Morten Lauridsen, David Childs, Eric Whitacre, and Moses Hogan.

Mr. Ntwa received $500 toward private voice lessons, and  performed with the Columbia Choral Society at its March 26 concert. Congratulations, Michael.
