Announcing the 2023 Guthrie Darr Young Artist Scholarship Competition 

The Columbia Choral Society Guthrie Darr Young Artist Scholarship exists to encourage and support local young artists who are interested in studying voice independently with a private music teacher.

In 2023: Application Packet DUE Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

Award: The scholarship will be awarded through a juried competition April 17, 2023. The winner may also be offered the opportunity of performing as a guest artist at a Columbia Choral Society Concert. The judges will award a scholarship of $500.  The scholarship will be paid directly to a private local vocal instructor to assist the winner with the vocal instruction, to be completed by December 31.

Competition: Monday, April 17, 2023, 6:30-7:15
(Watch your email for Warm-Up Time between 5:00 and 6:15.)

Auditions are held in August and January each season.

Please contact Dr. Elizabeth M. Mears by email to arrange your audition time.

 Things to Know

• Please arrive early for your audition in case we are ahead of schedule.
• Prepare a solo of your choice. An art song, aria, folk song, or a hymn would be appropriate. Please remember to bring a copy of the music for the accompanist.
• You will be asked to sing some basic vocal exercises to determine the extent of your vocal range.
• You will also be asked to sight read a short passage.

 Choral Society Expectations

• We expect our members to make a personal investment in the Choral Society community.
• We expect that each member individually and collectively will strive for musical excellence.
• We expect members to make every rehearsal and performance a priority.
• We hope that your membership is for the entire performance year. We need you at every performance!
